Budget fashion chain Primark has accelerated its timeline for rolling out a home delivery service by approximately two years. The strategic shift comes as the company seeks to win over new shoppers following a recent slide in corporate profits. George Weston, chief executive of the retailer's parent organization Associated British Foods, confirmed that the launch timeline had been moved up significantly.
Under the updated business plan, Primark intends to have its digital home delivery service up and running in the United Kingdom before the end of December 2027. The company was able to advance its schedule by acquiring a robot-assisted warehouse in Sheffield from Debenhams. Primark plans to take control of that distribution facility by the middle of next year and is actively working with suppliers to prepare stock suitable for individual customer dispatches rather than traditional bulk store shipments.
Historically, the high-street brand maintained that digital fashion sales and home delivery were economically unviable. However, executive leadership noted that shifting industry standards around delivery and returns fees have altered logistical economics. Market research also indicated that an online channel would successfully attract consumers who live too far from physical storefronts instead of simply cannibalizing existing in-store retail sales.
The strategic shift coincides with intense competitive pressures from digital-first online specialists as well as established hybrid retailers. Financial results for the year ending September 12 showed total Primark sales climbing 4% to £9.8bn, driven largely by new store openings. Conversely, performance at established locations proved more challenging, with UK like-for-like sales growing by just 0.5%, while mature stores in mainland Europe and the United States contracted by 4.7% and 2.6% respectively as consumers reined in spending.
Following the initial UK introduction, the company plans to evaluate expanding the home delivery model to mainland European markets, though no specific deployment timeframe has been established for those regions.
